The "Geek Lifestyle" and its health hazards

I was doing some surfing this morning and ran into a good article about health issues related to geek lifestyles. The article was written by a doctor who started in the IT field but later moved on to medicine. It was a pretty neat article and identified several specific factors of the geek lifestyle that may pose medical concerns.

  1. Horrible Sleep hygiene. This is obvious, geeks love the late hours for surfing and staying hooked into the web for what ever reasons they have.
  2. Headaches. Mostly linked to heavy computer use.
  3. Back Pain. I think this topic addresses everyone but geeks tend to be in a chair more than most people are.
  4. Poor Attention Span. This is because of heavy stress on the brain while multitasking. Geeks are great at doing many things at once but when they are forced to sit down and concentrate on just one thing they have trouble.
To read the complete article you can go here.

As I develop more content for my blog/site I will address these issues because they seem to be common. I would like to add that I always had the intention of including health and nutrition advice in my content geared towards geeks and average Joes. I know it is not realistic for some people to hit the gym 4 or even 3 times a week like most Men's magazines suggest. After all my experiences with different workouts and my OCD behavior with researching everything that I have an interest in I think I am qualified enough to give advice to others. At the very least I can tell you how I got to where I am.
